10 Minute Chia Seed Blueberry Jam

A couple years ago, I tried making jam on a whim because it seemed like one of those charming, old fashioned skills that people don’t really do anymore. I didn’t realize how amazing it would taste, that I could save money by making it myself, or that my kids would become total jam snobs who refuse anything but the real homemade deal.

I can’t blame them though. Homemade jam is worlds away from what you can get on the store shelf.  Flavors are fresh and vibrant and you can tailor it to whatever your family likes. Plus it makes your kitchen smell amazing with very little effort!

I usually choose fresh fruit for jam making. Unfortunately it’s winter right now here in Kansas so buying fresh, out of season berries costs you an arm and a leg. I’d like to keep my arms and legs, even if they are sort of frost-bitten from our unseasonably cold, snowy weather.

So if fresh blueberries are super expensive in your area, check out the freezer section at the store. Frozen fruit and berries are oftentimes much cheaper than their fresh counterparts when shopping out of season. Luckily for us, those frozen blueberries make an amazing jam!

Don’t worry about getting fancy with this jam, friend.  Rip open that bag, dump your blueberries in like the total domestic boss you are, stir in some lemon juice, sugar, and a couple tablespoons of chia seeds. Then revel in your homemade, super food goodness that only took 10 minutes of your time.

Why add chia seeds? These protein and omega-3 packed wonders simply help the jam gel and thicken up quickly. Don’t have chia seeds on hand? No problem! Just cook the jam a little longer until it thickens and sticks to the spoon.
